After Kaylynn's death, Don went over to the house. When he first entered, he could see the damage left by the fire. He immediately set about getting the place cleaned up. As he cleaned, Don remembered when he had first heard of Kaylynn's death. He couldn't believe it! His first thought had been of his son. Donald was safe inside the walls of the Pleasantview Orphanage. Don decided to not make any hasty decisions. He decided to leave Donald right where he was for the time being. What else could he do? Cassandra wasn't likely going to allow him to bring his illegitimate son to live with them, was she? He would just have to wait and think this thing through.
Don thought of Donald as he cleaned up the home his son had lived in with Kaylynn. He decided to just call the orphanage and ask how Donald was doing. Don dialed the orphanage and spoke with the administrator. "Donald Langerak has already found a new home. It was a private adoption so I can't give you any more information, Mr. Lothario. Don't worry...we check out our applicants very carefully. You can be sure he was adopted into a wonderful family!" Don could hardly believe what he had just heard.
Bringing his hands to his face, Donald wept softly. He wept for the loss of his son. He wept for Kaylynn...he had not done right by her and he now felt guilty. Why hadn't he tried to see his son more often? Was he lost to him forever?
Don went outside into the sunshine. He needed to get out of that house...that morgue. Kaylynn's headstone lay in the back yard, nestled beneath the fruit trees in a shady spot. What would Don do with the house now? His life suddenly felt as empty as the jar he looked into.
